SABA LOGOUT

We’ve been on the trail of Chicago rapper SABA since 2016 when the bar-setting single ‘Symmetry’ was release, and recently we were reminded of his lyrical dexterity and emerging performance style with ‘Busy’. This week the undeniable talent releases a ten-track record titled CARE FOR ME, and no release would be complete without a feature from long-term collaborator Chance the Rapper. Where Bennett steps up to the plate is on the two minute thirty bottle rocket of a track, ‘LOGOUT’. Soothing piano, jazzy guitar notes, powerful double bass and punchy trap creates a rich tapestry of sound for Saba unravel his story of social media, life on camera, fantasy and boredom. Taking the helm for the first two minutes, Saba’s wisdom hits each beat with contemporary observations of the validation we’re all seeking via the internet, but really all the facade serves as “a reminder just how boring our lives are.” Chance comes along for a closing verse, ruminating over the same issues as his friend Saba, each line comparing how everyone, anyone, someone is going through these same experiences of increased technology, wifi addiction and obsession with likes, although there are a few who “aint put a picture on their wall since the stone age.” Not everyone is drinking the kool aid, and maybe we should try logging out a little more often. - Hannah Thacker
